Left, or Left Wing is Liberal
Right, or Right Wing is Conservative

The terms date back to the French Assembly. People of one particular persuasion sat on one side of the room, the others sat on the opposite side.

[quote]
left wing
• noun 1 the radical, reforming, or socialist section of a political party or system. with reference to the National Assembly in France (1789-91), where the nobles sat to the president’s right and the commons to the left.

The conservatives, or Republicans are considered the right. The liberals, or Democrats are the left.

It took me a long time to figure out where it came from, too but.....it's all based on tradition that goes back to the origin of our nation.
If you've ever watched the President's formal State of the Union Address.....the one where all those people stand up and applaud in such a formal manner.....The Republican group always sits on the right side of the auditorium, and the Democrats take the left side. That is where the right wing/left wing thing comes from. When he says something the Reps like, they all stand up in unison and the Dems stay seated. If he says something they all like, they all stand up. The military group is seated in their own special seats as are the Supreme Court Justices. They are suppose to remain impartial, so they rarely stand up and applaud anything. It's ALL tradition.

I was trying t find out what building it is always done in, and I think it is the Congress building. I went to Google and typed in: State of the Union Address Traditions. This is one of the hits I found, but there are lots more....and lots more traditions they follow.

Go to Google, and have fun learning. And, it's NOT an ignorant question. Where there is a sincere desire to learn something, there is no such thing as an ignorant question.

The whole thing is an extension of the old Roman technique of "divide and conquer". If our "leaders" keep the masses arguing over meaningless issues then we wont notice as they consolidate our wealth into their pockets and our freedom under their control.

The definitions of "left wing" and "right wing" have actually shifted several times over the years. The Nazis were not considered "conservative" but they were right wing...while at the same time in America "conservative" southern Democrats were trying to revive slavery and institutionalizing discrimination.

The fact that the definition is not absolute shows that these are really just more control mechanisms from the top.

Conservative is wrong--not left or right, but they are commonly called righty's.--LOL

I'd go to Wikpedia for the definitions--getting a non-partisan answer will be very difficult here. See above sentence.

If you don't know or comprehend what or where you are politically, there's a sense of shame that and guilt that should overwhelm you to figure it out. On the other hand--being left or right isn't something that's taught by educators with the tenacity that it should be.

Interesting question. Liberal is called "left" and conservative is called "right". But I've never been able to find out why....

That's why I tend not to use the "left" and "right" labels, since they are entirely arbitrary as far as I've been able to determine.

Liberal do anything just don't step on my toes, Conservative follow the ten commandments, and Left kill the christians.

"Left" and "right" don't really have anything to do with it. It's just another way of distinguishing a difference.
