but this is superficial tarnish if silver is centuries old expect it to be black!

A dulling of the sliver piece; usually black and grey. After a long time in will turn mostly black. If silver plate and not all silver you will get a yellowish brown color and then it will darken also to mostly black.

It looks black...go get some TARN-X, it is in a black bottle and it comes right off. I bought mine at WalMart. Works great, even on silver jewelery.

It looks like the beginning stages of rust, sometimes black or gray, it just dulls the finish basically so it can be almost any color.
