Let's take a look at what you might see on a credit card receipt. Here's what it usually looks like in the U.S.:

Amount......$20.00
Tip ___________
Total __________

The amount is the total on the bill. The tip is the amount you choose to leave your server as a tip. The total is the amount + the tip.

So here's what this receipt might look like after it is filled out:

Amount......$20.00
Tip _______$4.00
Total _____$24.00

If you prefer, you can also leave a cash tip. Here's how you should indicate it on the receipt:

Amount......$20.00
Tip ______CASH
Total ____ $20.00

I hope this helps.

If you're paying the tip on your credit card, you write the tip on the first dotted line (15 - 20% of the bill before tax, depending on the level of service), and the total on the second dotted line.

I asked a server which they prefer, credit card or cash tips, since I honestly didn't know. She told me they always prefer cash, but would't say exactly why, and laughed. I thinkshe meant they pocket the cash and don't report it as income. Who's to know? Also, when it's on the card, it often gets divided among all the waitstaff, which defeats the purpose of tipping in the first place - gratitude for excellent service.

First, you let the one who runs your card know that you want to leave a tip. Then, they will ask you how much and they will then add that amount to your original bill and then charge your card for it. Also, thay will have you sign a slip. Just write the amount of the tip and designate that it is a tip.

Yes, you write how much you would like to tip, the machine is setup to do a block for the tips amount without the need to have the card present. Remember to total up the amount manually and write it in the slip in case of any future disputes

One of the lines usually says tip and then you total your bill with the tip. However, most restaurants don't bother making tallies of these tips by server, so they put it all into a pot and split it among the staff.

If you want to make sure your server gets your tip, I'd leave a cash tip at the table. It doesn't really cost you anything and the server will appreciate it more.
