Harper Lee was born in 1926 and this book is based on her childhood. Therefore, it takes place in the early 1930's over a period of a couple of years. As the book opens, Scout starts the first grade. By the end of the book, she is in the 2nd or 3rd, playing the ham in the school pageant. Remember there are references to the Depression, (the dad talks to Scout about taking produce and chickens for law fees.)

The time period occurs in the 1930's and the climax of the story begins in 1936. Scott was 6 when Dill arrived and Jem was 10.
