Or is it just me who feels this way?

Yep, I feel that way all the time. -_- The key to staying sane in spite of it all, though, is to not take it personally. If you think the whole "mockery and amusement" thing is directed at you specifically and personally (and exclusively), you'll end up bitter, alienated from other people, and one step away from being outright paranoid.

Not that I don't have an occasional bad day, where I wonder: "Why *do* I have a carbon monoxide detector in my apartment when everything in it runs on *electricity* and nothing runs on gas or burns anything that could *make CO*? Is it really a CO Detector, and if so, why is it mounted so that it can "shoulder surf" while I am on my computer?" O_O So yeah, I do have bad days where I do take it personally and get paranoid, but...

The idea is to get to where, on most days, you think in terms of "Life is out to mock and humiliate *people LIKE me*," instead of "Life is out to mock and humiliate *me personally*." The first statement is much more realistic and much less likely to damage your sanity. It's easier for me to think in terms of "That CO detector really is what it is, I live in public housing in an *old* buliding after all, who *knows* what's going on with the heating system or the hot water heater? And even so....the building is run by cheap, petty idiots....this isn't about *me*, this is about hassling people *like me*, namely, everyone who lives in the building *with me*..."

See the difference? It's more realistic and less unhealthy to think in terms of a "conspiracy of incompetence" or a "conspiracy of the institution" where you realize, you're not alone and not being singled out...this way there's a built in reason "why" even if it amounts more to human stupidity and arrogance than anything (you just happen to be part of an out-group in society that gets treated like dirt). The alternative ends up making you a Minority of One, an "Enemy of the State" wherein *everybody's in on it* and you're perpetually *cornered like a rat*.

Yep, it's the evil of two lessers. ^_^ You can either run damage control and lessen the damage to your sanity, or you can not do it, and go bushwhack when the flight or fight response becomes too much to repress. It's your call.

I hope this made sense and was helpful. Know that you're not alone in this, people like us get picked on all the time by the High and Mighties in society.

Take care and stay safe. ^_^ Thanks for your time, good question!
