I know I'm not supposed to transport the wood from the ash tree. We're having it taken down today because it's been infested with ash borer. Can we burn the wood in our backyard firepit?

yes. burn it all at once. Kill all the eggs and the bugs. Don't consider it firewood. Consider it destroying a noxious pest that could kill every other ash tree in the country! BURN IT!

check your local codes to see if you can. Your tree expert may have to take away the wood for containment and disposal.

Emerald ash borer is a real shame. Ash is one of my fave trees. Sorry yours was infected. :-(

Depends on your local laws. Here in this area of Colorado they prefer that you burn only in what thy refer to as a campfire, properly surrounded with a firebreak and an extinguisher at hand. As an alternative, check with your local fire department. Ours has a big pit where we can dump our flammables and they burn them off periodically.

In addition to what Christy said, there are places where burning laws are in effect. For instance, there is one place I know where you aren't supposed to have open-air fires before 4:30.
