I've been trying to figure that out for a long time.

Some people genuinely think you're faking it and so are trying to hit you back before you hit them, so to speak.

Others maybe don't know how to respond.

And some are genuinely mean-spirited. And more often than not very stupid. In this case, very often it comes back to bite them right where they sit down- because people will remember their actions, and when they need help they won't get it.

I think its because they either:
1. Think your niceness is fake and feel like they aren't prepared to make time for someone who isn't being genuine, or
2. Feel threatened/jealous of you for being nice and for having lots of friends, therefore have to say and do mean things towards you to bring you down to their level.

Either way, it is better to just carry on being nice to them rather than stooping to their level, because they aren't worth the time or energy.
