Paper is the traditional first anniversary gift.
* Tickets to a show.
* A book
* A map to "buried treasure"
* a love letter
* Cash or Gift Certificate (not a gift card...that's not paper)
* a book of "love coupons" for favors on demand - maybe a get out of deep **** free coupon (make sure there's an expiration on it!)
* a deed to some land (http://www.laphroaig.com/friends/about.asp)
there's lots of great ideas. Be creative...he'll appreciate the effort of the idea as much as the playful nature of his life companion as much as the gift!

On all the lists of wedding gifts, the first anniversary is always listed as the "paper" anniversary.
Here is my suggestion...a card and money. Both are made of paper, and the amount of money you put in the card depends on your budget.
You could also include a cute little letter describing all the great times you have spent together...yet more paper.
Good luck with many more anniversaries.

The first anniversary is the most important. The theme is paper and if you have a bunch of fun loving friends, you will be stocked up on tp for months. You will have to be more creative for hubby though. Paper could be a Country Club gift certificate for 810 holes of golf. A few shares of Berkshire-Hathaway (or one share - it is the thought that counts) or a certificate of title(pink-slip) to a 250 GT Berlinetta Ferrari (make that red with Pirellis and a Blaupunkt.........."Happy Anniversary"

Something to symbolize 12 months or time spent. A fancy watch or something like that with your wedding date inscribed inside.

Traditional gift is paper. I'd go for a note. My preference would be currency not hand written.
