Anything but a Pontiac Grand Prix, or Grand Am.

Recent-year 3.8 V6 engines are known to have great power and economy (16 mpg? you've gotta be kidding!). They are very reliable and, whilte antiquated compared to other engines, compare favorably because they are a good design. Some of them are supercharged, which adds performance, but can also add complexity. The base ones tend to be more than adequate for most types of driving. As far as which ones are best, perhaps your best bet is to check out Consumer Reports magazine, as they have a pretty decent list of reliability issues for many cars for their respective years. Sometimes, similar cars (like a Grand Prix and a Monte Carlo) may have different reliability issues due to a number of circumstances, so don't assume all of them are created equal.

Monte Carlo's and malibu's are both nice cars. Expect about 25 highway, 16 city real world mileage (they're rated higher) for almost any GM 6 cylinder car.
