If you are the person with the council owned tree outside your house DON'T KILL IT cos you will be in BIG trouble with the council.GET professional(solicitor) advice FIRST.DON'T do anything that will get you into trouble.A solution can be found.

I see this question and answer a lot but it would take a couple years and I have yet to find a ready source of decent sized copper nails. A better way is to "girdle" the trunk by removing a ring of bark at the base of the tree. This can be done with a pruning saw, chain saw, hammer and chisel or a sharp spade. I leave or create dead trees on my property for the birds, some birds will only nest in or on a dead tree. RScott

I had an old hackberry (weed tree) in the middle of my front yard. It was too huge to just cut down with my chain saw, & the professionals wanted $400 to cut it down. I merely removed a strip of bark from around the entire trunk, about 2 or 3 feet from the ground. In just a few months, the tree was dead. All of the nourishment to the top of the tree has to travel up through just under the bark. The center of the trunk is just like a post to hold it up....it doesn't carry nutrients at all. Just be sure to cut into the tree about an inch or so deep, and wait.....That's all there is to it.

You girdle the tree. Remove the bark around the base of the tree until you have gone past the inner bark. Go completely around the tree, this is why it is called girdling. This will cause the tree to die. I dont think a copper nail will do it but girlding will. I understand your plight. I, too, am a tree lover but sometimes it becomes necessary to remove a tree.

No. Girdling is the best for trash tree removal. Cut a ring around the tree that goes through the bark and the layer just under it. That will interfere with the nutrients going up to the tree.

If the tree has a preservation order on it, check with your local council, then you can end up with a criminal record if you cut it down, or damage it in any way.
If there is no preservation order, simply have a qualified tree surgeon remove it. Once felled, you may wish to remove the stump. The Tree Surgeon may have a stump grinder and can get rid of it that way.

The fancy name is girdling, simply cut a ring of bark off the tree all the way around it.approximately three inch's tall .This will kill it.

I've heard that if you get a small bit of copper in your eye, it can make you go blind.
But from I've read after looking this up is no.

I wouldnt go killing that tree. If it's protected you will go to jail. Exhaust all the conventional routes first.
