I mean- in terms of being less stoic or less willing to endure minor hardship or deprivation?
Especially in reference to the immediate post-war generation.
Is this positive or negative?

All of these answers were fantastic- and yes we have lost a very dear part of England that I cherished- the friendly neighbours, sense of community, simple joys, respect for your elders and your betters (humility is not such a bad quality). So I put it to the vote.
Compare our English yesteryear to the Blair 'Respect' society today.

Yes but there is no way you can blame people. People needed each other when things were bad both during the war and after.Everyone looked after each other. They also schooled, lived and played in their own community creating a sense of belonging and respect. I feel so sorry for the youngsters of today the boundaries that were moved gradually as they grew are not there from day one and it appears they now have to fight for their "corner" Men were men and women were women.Mother did the nagging and failing that it would take only a threat from Dad.There was also the local bully but the other kids would protect the weak and the bully would would want to join in unlike today where the lack of comradeship and sense of belonging draws kids to join the bully. I could go on but I will only say we have robbed todays children and those now starting out in life of a great deal. I would rather be poor as we were and have to share a bed with my sisters only get to eat an ice cream on my birthday but be able to swim in rivers run in the cornfields eat crab apples know I could knock on any door for a drink of water and be welcomed and go home with all my friends tired and happy. That was the Great Britain of yesterday I don't think such values can ever be restored .Life is far to fragmented and expectations too great.

More choice nowadays, more freedom....increasing confusion amongst the 'IPOD' generation.
We do not enjoy/value the simple pleasures in life anymore..such as a sweet smile from a stranger, going for a walk in the park, being grateful for family..etc
We are becoming increasingly materialistic and 'respect' for individuals is now based on meritocracy so people do not feel 'good enough'. This increases pressure, leads to worrying, lack of self esteem, depression..etc
What state will we be in - in 20 years time?

It's the oestrogen in recycled water, all the hormone and birth control pills that we pee down the loo and the steroids and antibiotics we've pumped into livestock that we all consume, as well as positive discrimination and gay rights taking over television stations, education, health service advice and expounding their ways and lifestyles and their habits on our young before their minds have developed. confusing them with abortions, morning after pills, their rights as children, how to go behind their parents backs for all these things, whilst neutering the parents rights, then blaming them when it goes out of control... letting them stay children far too long and never saying no to them... actually encouraging self, self, self gratification, and effeminacy.
the so called gay rights movement has infiltrated every area of our culture and badly damaged development of masculinity in men, and femininity in women.
One of the last generation who never had it easy, and still remembers when men were men and women, women... and family was born of two parents so kids had balanced views and never questioned their sexuality, merely grew into it!
It's rare for me to go on the attack this way, live and let live was my motto, but too much damage has been done by staying silent in the UK in less than half my lifetime.
Bring back Christian values, it's what our country and our government and our society was founded on!

Modern generations have never known deprivation - rationing, fear of invasion, the disruption of bombing, loss of relatives through war. Maybe that's one of the big differences.
