The recomended time is 6 months. After that, It starts to get a little funky. If your worried about getting an infection, don't push the wand up and down constantly. It pushes air into the tube (air that can have germs etc.) and makes it dry.

Most people are WRONG!!!! its is NOT 2 years and its is not whenever it gets outta style. A mascara tube is a place to breed bacteria and germs because it is moist, closed off and dark. The maximum time you should keep a bottle of mascara is 6 months. Most people throw it out after 3 months but that's not necessary if you DON'T pump the wand, let other people use it or if you just bought it recently. If you bought a mascara like say a year ago and have never opened it, you should still throw it away coz the mascara solution has probably expired and gotten clumpy or dry. remember these tips and you'll be eye-infection safe!

As a new regulation about 2 years ago, all cosmetic products now have to have a 'sell by date'.
This includes shower gels, shampoo's, mascara, lip glosses, even eye shadow and liner.
To find this on an item just look for the open jar symbol on any of these products. Inside this jar symbol will contain the number of months the product is 'fresh' for from the date of usage. ie 6m, 12m, 24m etc.
My mascara is 6 months, by going by that I would say that is the standard.

i think the time is 6 months to a year. i watch the Tyra Show and she did a show where you could see all the bugs that grow in mascara after a year and it was gross. there were so many bugs. i would get rid of it after 6 months

'They' say 3 mos., but I usually keep it til it starts getting dry--some of mine are a year old (I have several different kinds I use). I've never had any infections, or any other problems with it. If you are prone to infections, or are just worried about it, then toss every few months, as recommended. Otherwise, use your discretion.

I throw away my mascara when it gets clumpy and doesn't go on smoothly anymore. I've never had an eye infection, and I've always followed this rule of thumb.
