In most cases surburban homes are built as cheaply as possible for the highest profit possible. I'm in construction and these "cookie cutter" homes are becoming more and more popular with home builders these days. Suburban homes are often so close together it would seem like living in a sardeen can having such a fence to box you in. As for home owners installing fences themselves, it seems rude to put one in on your front lawn with such a small property. It would appear that you're trying to shut the rest of the neighborhood out.

I live in America and I have wondered the same thing. I would like to put up a fence in the front, I think its pretty but I don't think the city would approve it because no one else has one and it would look out of place. It would also stop rude people from walking their pets in your yard and letting them do the deed. I don't know, I'm sure in some neighborhoods its prohibited and in others that are less structured you can do what you want. Ours is structured and the city is really picky about what we add to our houses. Yes it is very common not to have a fence in the front and only in the back.

I never had a fence aroud any house I've ever lived in...must be a British thing....Of course I've never lived in a city, always in the country, where the wide open spaces are visible 24/7 and you can see for miles and miles....if I can't shoot my gun and pee off my front porch and not have to worry about upsetting somebody, then I might as well just up and die.... who needs a fence...

The front of the house is usually open to be neighborly. The backyard is fenced for privacy. In bad neighborhoods the front is fenced like a fortress

Just difference in area.
Personally, I want to someday have a high iron fence around my house with lots of pretty trees. I like the look.

Fences serves 3 purposes, to retain, to keep out and to add a aesthetic look to a home all of which is not necessarily needed in most American homes.

From what I heard out here in MI. where I live, two neighbors living next to each other, can not have a fence up at the same time, I know it sounds funny, but when my sister lived in a house, she had a fence around her propery, then her neighbor wante to put one up around their propery & the county said no!
