Mixing "left" (liberal) and "right" (conservative) is common in any diverse government -- it just depends on the specific mix of people involved. No large national group is ever just one.

Dictatorships are almost universally "right-wing" (conservative) because of the nature of population control. Liberal mindset demands freedom of individuality and protection of civil liberities. Conservative mindset allows and expects conformity and suppression of individual freedoms for the benefit of everyone. That's part of their core beliefs.

So, it's far easier for a conservative government to go from promoting community morality and mandating conformity with what it thinks is best, since they already seek to impose limits (and often actual controls) over the individual.

I think dictatorships can be either right wing or left wing, because the terms can be used to describe so many political views. To describe a view as right or left wing exclusively, really doesn't tell me much. But one description that is more informative is dictatorships are statism, and modern social liberals and to a certain degree neo-cons are statists. While I don't want to call either group dictatorial, they can be a stone throw away from greater government control. That is why I stay a classical liberal. The opposite of a modern social liberal, well,in most respects.

Depends. Castro is a Dictator and is left wing. Chavez is left and has been givien full reign to do what he wants.
Liberal/Left needs power to implement and run government programs with other people's money.
Conservative/Right wants minimal government and more personal responsibility.
Therefore you can have dictators on either side. The rule is, If you're poor you want to be rich. if you're rich, you want to be king.

One is forced to say left wing because totalitarians, marxists, and even socialists are a product of the left. One of the core beliefs of the left is that you have to have A LOT of govt involvement with huge govt programs, huge taxes, and tremendous governmental authority and power. Whereas the right views govt as something that needs to be restrained.
