the previous owners were smokers and after almost a year of carpet cleanings and open window airings, the place still smells like a cheap motel. I notice it especially when the humidity is very high. Any more suggestions? Thanks!

There's nicotine in the paint on your walls. Wipe down the walls with bleach or CLR (you will see the brown nicotine drip down the walls) then paint the whole house, with the first coat being "Killz" primer. That will seal in any nicotine that you didn't get off with the cleaner.

If the smoke odor is in the carpet, replace the carpet and pad. Wash the walls and ceilings where practical and re-paint the interior. You may want to consider hardwood or ceramic tile floors.

Once you've cleaned the place top-to-bottom you can only replace residual smells. Do you ever burn incense? It is a more agreeable smoke. I recommend Nag Champa.

Maybe wipe down the walls with a mild bleach solution.

I think you need to hire a professional smoke removal company (same kind who do post-fire cleanups). Cig stink is very persistent and you will never defeat it on your own.

I suggest lightening a lot of strongly scented candles.
