It is going the 'wrong' way around (a satellite that was formed directly around the planet will orbit in the same direction as the planet's spin -- a 'prograde' satellite).

It is slowly approaching the planet because of tidal effects it has on Neptune ('prograde' satellites will be moved outwards by tidal effect -- like our Moon is)

It is suspected of having being captured. Because of that, it must have had a very eccentric orbit: the tidal effects of Neptune on it could have rounded its orbit (however, that would tranfer energy to Triton, see next paragraph).

Before being captured by Neptune, Triton could have been of the same composition as Pluto. Tidal dissipation (from tidal effects) was so large just after capture that the entire mantle, mostly water, was melted and heated. At the interface between the mantle and the silicate core, the water mixed with and was heated by core matter (radioactivity). Mantle water could have reached 470°K (200 C, 380 F), with a pressure of a few thousand bars(!) The atmospheric pressure at Earth's surface is approximately 1 bar.

This is a very unusual thing for satellites. All other moons orbit Neptune counterclockwise, the same direction of Neptune rotation while Triton orbits Neptune in the opposite direction, clockwise.

I don't know the cause for this, but it's very strange.

Triton is about 3,54,000km from neptune and it needs about 5.877days to complete one rotation around neptune. Nereid is another moon which is about 55,10,000km from neptune and it needs 365.2 days to complete one rotation around neptune.
