Well. it depends on the person and how close they are to the one who has died or is sick or broke up with.
To me, a break up is the worst b/c you will always wonder what did you do and then when you see that other person with someone else, your heart gets broken over and over again especially if you loved that person.
A death of a loved one can hurt too but you have to accept that they are not coming back and you will not ever see that person again. And they are in a better place. I lost my 23 year old brother in a car accident, we were very close, living with each other, and it was so sudden, it still hurts and I relive that day a lot but I know he's in a better place.
A sick child/spouse it depends on how seriously ill they are. If it's just a cold, we can just nurse them to health or bring them to the doctor or hospital. If they are terminally sick, you have an idea of when they will die so you have time to say good bye and spend time with them.

I disagree with the answers given so far, I think a sick child is the most emotionally harmful thing. I don't know if you've ever seen a really sick child deteriorating, even if they are cured later on, at the time it's the saddest thing that anyone could imagine, and you are left with the image of the child slowly slipping away.
In the case of death of a loved one at least they're not suffering any more, and for those who believe in a heaven or afterlife you have the reassurance that they are being taken care of there.

Death of a loved one, and I have heard that losing a child is the most painful loss of all because they are part of you, you see yourself in them. They are almost always much too young to die, and so much potential and future dreams seem lost.
A breakup hurts a lot, but that person is still alive and maybe there's a chance if you really wanted to get back with them. death is final.

I say death of a loved one. You'll get over a break up, a sick child or spouse will get better. But you can never bring someone back from the dead.
