Not sure when the best time to take a clipping of grapevine from a friends large plant. Want to start one of my own. I am in zone 5, so need to know if I clilp when plant is dormat or just starting to bud. thinking of dipping clipped vine in root hormone and laying in soil to take root. I need help to do this at the right time.

Do it while it is dormant. If you prune grape vines during the spring, particularly, they run sap from the cuts like from an open faucet.

When you do it you may as well get a bunch of clippings to attempt to root. You might also see if your friend has any rooted sprouts that he is planning to cut off to keep the vines trained properly. Those would already have a usable root system.

Think spring. When the plants are just coming out is absolutely the best time to transplant. They're sucking nutrients like it was going out of style and you'll have a better success rate. The hormone is an extra bonus, but you should be fine without it, just try to root it in water first before putting in the ground, but sticking it in the ground should work.
