We get accustomed to the common dangers in the area where we live. We know which neighborhoods are dangerous and, often, we know at what time of day they are dangerous! We know how to minimize the chances of harm. We know that our precautions are not 100% guaranteed, and sudden death can occur in the most unlikely times and places, but we know the chances are small. I have lived in large cities and smaller cities, and I can vouch for this.
