Whats the difference between an application and a skillset?

In terms of call centre telephony. How does the whole system work? What does the script do, what does the application do, where does a CDN come in?

In this context a 'Script' is a list of questions and answers the call centre staff have to follow

CDN == Content Delivery Network (part of the CRM system)
