That is the measurement from one point of (fixed object) land to another point of land

2. Astronomical surveying
The same is true of this, it is to measure from one point to the next point on fixed objects/(one planet to the next planet.) OR, from a fixed point on earth to a planet.

3. Statistical surveying
Is asking X amount of people for opinion/or question then to add up the yes or no's to see how many respond in a certain manner,dividing the number of responses by X amount of people to determine a percentage of the answers
