Not missing something. I just completely disagree with you.
The acting has always been suspect on Doctor Who. Personally, I think acting on the newer shows is far better than anything they offered up previously.
The stories are fun! It's sci-fi! It's supposed to be a little outrageous. It isn't any worse than that tripe on Battlestar Crappica.
The special effects . . . dude, have you ever watched ANY Doctor Who? That's half of the point.
If you don't like it, I get it. But I love it. It's good fun. :)

You're probably not missing something, no. Season 1 of the new version started out ropey and grew to be truly excellent, with Christopher Ecclestone leading some really great acting, and a "wow" factor in the storylines and effects. Tennant's first season, in contrast, was pretty ropey most of the way through, with Tennant himself seeming to have two modes - frowningly serious or manic and grinning. I don't think the writers knew where they wanted the Doctor to go in terms of personality, so he floundered slightly. Hopefully, the new series (starting tonight in the UK) will have established the "kind" of Doctor he is, and hopefully build on what's gone before to energise the series again.

Well like everything in life you either like it or don't.
I think that the last episode of Doctor Who series 2 was great especially at the end when Rose gets taken into the parallel earth, that emotion was brilliant and where she met him in Denmark on the beach im sorry that was some brilliant acting, by both parties.
Plus we found out that Daleks can now defeat Cybermen.
Having said that i don't like other Sci-fi programmes like Star-Trek, Voyager,Stargate SG-1 or Babylon 5 , strange huh?.
Can't personally wait for the new series Tonight

Yes you are. Dr.Who dates wayyyyy back. It was a cheesy, low budget produced UK TV show. The new ones have better budget but have kept the charm of the old ones going. I've been a fan of Dr. Who since I watched it with my 6 year old(1981) in the afternoon when he came home from school. At that time it was Tom Baker playing the doctor. Like all cult show/movies you are a fan or you are not.

Personally I think that Doctor Who is great. I cant see anything wrong with the acting at all - Its much funnier than the original. More up-to-date. More lively.
As for special effects.. How good do you want them? There's a budget on that sort of thing nowadays.
The reason people moan and say its rubbish is probably because they're jealous of the enjoyment others get out of watching it.

sorry that you don't enjoy it. I adore the show. As far as I am concerned it is the best thing on TV (ever)! it may not be as flash as some American shows but it has spirit, it's fun, and it's clever. no other show has such a brilliant format, its truly unique. I suggest you watch the episode The Girl in the Fireplace which is the best bit of pure science fiction I have seen on TV. It is an absolute classic.

The hype is because its Dr who, the show that has been around forever and which our parents grew up watching.
and yes the new series is awful, but I mainly watch it so I can laugh at how bad it is.
