My sister recently bought a Dell computer. the computer has Windows Vista. Most times when it is restarted or shut down and then turned back on, Vista will look like it is loading, the little windows vista symbol will come up but then it will hang at a black screen. I have ran all of Dells onboard diagnostic tests, as well as trying start up repair from a vista boot disc - neither tactic yielded results. In fact all the tests said no problems were present. If I manually shut off the comp and restart it a couple times it ends up working and I dont have any other problems. obviously though this isn't a great way to do things. Any help would be appreciated

Dealing with tech support would be the last resort.

With all due respect if this PC was recently purchased with Vista .... then you still have a software & hardware service agreement that Dell should honor.

Call the support line for your unit & they will offer you the best advice and/or solution.

Perhaps Dell or Micro-sponge would have the answer. You can't be the only one to experience this issue. Most computers are set up with a proprietary software configuration offered by the OEM. When you mentioned the on-board diagnostics it set off an alarm as to the possibility of the 'alleged incompatibility' of the software. Mucking about with the MBR is serious business and is irreversible!
