I have a roof leak and called a roofing contractor. He wants Almost $6500 to put new shingles on my roof. He said he has never seen shingles in the condition they are. My house is only 6 years old. I have never had a leak. Could this be caused by all the snow we had this winter? What do you think is this guy trying to screw me. It couldnt possibly be the snow. When I noticed it was built up on the roof about 16" my brother in law came over and blew it off with his snowblower before it got any higher. Damn deceiptful contractor is what I think.

the shingles more then likely got damaged when your brother in law put a snow blower on the roof. you never use a snow blower to clear your roof. as far as the cost of putting on new shingles, they charge so much a square foot to do it. when i had my roof done a few years ago it was a 100 dollars a square foot for a total of 4500 dollars. so no, it sounds like the contractor is quoting you a fair price depending on how many square feet your roof is.

Roofs are expensive. If the house is only 6 years old and are defective your 20 - 30 year warranty should cover the shingle materials. Contact the manufactor rep. or call your local shingle supply house they will give u the info u need.
Remember the labor could have been faulty and the warranty does not cover that part unless it is defective materials.

Couple of hints"

Always got more that one bid.
Avg in Houston market for tearoff, haulaway, and install of new roof is $125 -150 per square and that is on the high end.
That would mean u have between 45 - 48 squares on your house.

If u have a leak only and defective roof, fix the leak so as not to cause more interior problems till warranty work can be worked out.

good luck

I too say go with your gut. If it doesn't feel right don't do it. You should always get more than one bid on any job. Even builder grade shingle last more than 6yrs so I would be skeptical about the whole roof needing to be replaced. If you are a woman you are more likely to get B.S. from some of these guys. You didn't say was this a big Company, places like Home Depot are notorious for saying roofs need replacing, when all they need is a simple patch of a few shingles.

My husband IS a contractor, and I am always amazed by the ridiculous bids that go before him. He priced a deck the other day at $3,700 that a guy last week tried to charge them $16,000 for! (He is still making good money and he subs it out!)
My point is, get a second, third and FOURTH opinion. You will be amazed at how different their answers are. They always give free estimates so all you have to lose is your time. That way you can be fully informed. One out of four of them should be able to give you some good honest information! If you are married, make sure you are both there so you don't have to waste any body's time.

Trust your gut instinct. It's usually right. In my opinion, I think he is trying to screw you.
