Pittsburgh and Ottawa should be up above Atlanta whether they are there division leaders or not. They have better records and are better teams. I am a Pittsburgh girl and we sure love our Crosby and Malkin, but it seems like it doesn't matter what kind of record you have as long as you are in a sucky division....Does this seem unfair to anyone else?

Eastern Conference

1 x - BUFFALO* ---107 points
2 x - NEW JERSEY* --- 100 points
3 ATLANTA* ---91 points....
4 x - OTTAWA ---100 points
5 x - PITTSBURGH ---100 points

yea this makes real sense...

I hear you. In the West, this was the case for much of the season, with the leader of the Northwest Division (constantly switching between Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver) automatically ranked 3rd, while still 10 points below 4th in the Western Conference.

In the latter part of the season, Edmonton collapsed, Calgary remained steady, and Vancouver took off to get sole possession of first in the Northwest, and a strong 100+ point showing on par with the other two division leaders in the West.

And it's worth noting that Calgary's 94 points has them in 8th place and the last playoff spot in the West, which is 3 above Atlanta's 3rd-place 91 points in the East. LOL

Also keep in mind that this will backfire on Atlanta when they meet the 6th-place team which is better than they are. LOL

the top 3 teams in each division make it no matter how many points they get. Atlantic, Northeast, Southeast. the first place team in lets say the Northeast can have fewer points then the 10th place team but will still make it since they lead their division in points. its been a new rule put in a few years ago.

i would like to see it the old way when they had 2 conferences with 2 divisions each and the top 4 teams in their division would play each other 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. i don't like the new system at all.

No it isn't fair but it is deemed necessary.

If you didn't do it this way than conceivably a team could win the division but not make the playoffs. The league wants to reward teams that finish first in the division hence the automatic seed.

I would rather see 2 divisions per Conference which would minimize this 3rd weak division mess we see every year.

I would say no it is not fair. Heres how i would have the top 5 ranked ********
1. Buffalo
2. New Jersey
3. Ottawa
4.Pittsburgh
5. Atlanta
********
I am only going by the teams you mentioned here as to rankings. Personally I think they should go by points to rank the teams because you are rewarding a team by wins and not by the division they are in.Seedings are important as to home ice advantage and in the present system a lesser point would have home ice advantage over a better point team that to me is the biggest injustice of all.

No it isn't fair because my two Favorite teams are the Canadiens and the Pens, and before Atlanta got 91 points they had the same amount as Montreal and Montreal was fighting for a playoff spot which is total B.S, but it dosen't really matter right now seeing that the Pens are now in 2nd anyways
GO PENS!!!!

Who ever leads their division gets the top spots regardless of points, I think it is fair due to the fact that they play their division more than any other teams or division...until everyone plays all NHL teams the same this is a fair way to rank them.....i mean if you can beat out 4 other teams that you play quite often then you deserve it...your representing your division

Unfortunately Atlanta had a fairly easy schedule all season, and put them there. The system looks weird cause of how the NHL is set up with the point system and all, plus only having 3 Div. per Conf. So it doesn't look right at all. But, in all actuality, its the same as all sports. It just looks worse in the NHL cause of the whole point thing over going by wins. The NFL, MLB, NBA, all set up same way. Just looks crazy when seeing 100 points below 90 :/

Oh....I wouldn't worry about them or Tampa Bay anyway!! Both are gonna get destroyed first round anyway. Especially with there weak defense and terrible goal tending!

Because they are the divison leaders. And it is fair because they are winning their divison so they should deserve a good spot in the playoffs.

Dont worry New Jersey will beat Pittsburgh for the Atlantic Divison =]
