The only weight that really should be gained in a healthy pregnancy is what the baby weighs when born, the blood volume and amniotic fluid. The rest is mostly because women think that they are "Eating for two", but that is not the case. A woman only needs an extra 300 calories a day. I don't know where Bethy got her info, but gaining 10 pounds in the first week is not right. By the 12th week you should only have gained 3-5 pounds.

You should gain between 25-30 pounds during pregnancy. You should gain about 10 pounds the first week, and then about 1 pound each week after that. You should only be consuming between 300-500 more calories a day (don't eat for 2). Of course, all this depends on your weight prior to pregnancy. Here's a break-down of where that weight goes:
baby 7.5
Fat, protein and other nutrients 7 lbs.
blood 4 lbs.
fluids 4 lbs.
Uterus 2 lbs.
Amniotic fluid 2 lbs.
Breasts 2 lbs.
Placenta1.5 lbs.

I am currently 39 weeks. I have lost 4 pounds since the first OB appointment. This is not because I didn't eat enough. All I did was eat sensibly. The person who said that all you need is an extra 300 calories is correct. My nutritionist told me that too. That being said there are a lot of reasons that you can gain excessive amounts of weight. Eating for two, pre-eclampsia, mild fluid retention, ect...if these are the case then after you have the baby you will lose the "water weight" relatively easily. If you were eating for two, you might have to hit the gym for a while to "get your body back" and it may never exactly what it used to be. Also I hear breastfeeding helps you to lose weight faster.

Its normal to gain from 25lb-35lb from your weight. Yes you can loose it. The people who are unable to loose it could be that they don't take care of them selfs after giving birth. I have 3 kids. 5,4,&2. I went back to my regular weight from the first 2. I use a gridle/corset right away after getting home from hospital that helps the stomach to get flat and not keep the baby fat. I use to weight 125-135lb. After the 3 child I did gain weight but its all on my hips and butt. My tommy is flat. now I weight 157lb but I do excercise at least 3 times a day. I know it sounds like of lot of weight but I dont look fat at all.

Everyone has to gain a little weight when they are pregnant. But beware, if you think you can eat like a pig and not pay you are sadly mistaken. You have to excercise when pregnant as well as when you are not. There are plenty of maternity excercises and have found that the best excercise for pregnant women is in the water or swimming pool. If you take care of yourself then the pregnancy weight will come off easily.

Your body prepares itself for a child to be born it will gain weight automatically, everyone gains something.
Yes, you should go back to normal body weight if you gained the normal 35 pounds. If you gain more than that you might have more trouble losing it but it can be done.

I gained, but I always lost as much as I gained or even more afterwards. With my first one I gained 55 pounds, but I lost 60.

Of course you gain weight, there's a baby growing inside you. The difference is that some gain more than others.
Of course you can lose it again but again some lose weight easily and others have a difficult time.

Yes. All the pregnant women gain weight. However doctors will monitor to ensure the weight gain is not too much.
