it keeps higher education accessible to the masses. if colleges were only private, then to control registration, tuition would be out of reach for most of americans, look at the ivy league schools.
an educated population is a strong population, creates discussion, innovation, and independence is also created when your citizenry can think on their own.

A thing of intrinsic value is something that is valuable in and of itself. This is in contrast to something that is a means to an end. Higher education promotes the cultivation of almost everything we hold as intrinsically valuable in society. It is a portal to live above a life that focuses solely on self sustainment.

Duh!! It's a PUBLIC institution! What part of the term "public" do you not understand?

And if you honestly need to ask what the benefit is, I'd HIGHLY suggest that you enroll TODAY and find out for yourself!
