The home coming queen is popular but not famous. Popular would be more on the level of a positive public opinion or image. People like or want to be a popular person. Famous is just very well known by the general public. That does not make them popular automatically. Hitler was famous but not very popular. Mohammad Ali famous and popular.

Popular is derived from the Latin "populus," meaning "the people," and famous is derived from the Latin "famosus" meaning "widely known or acclaimed." The word popular in the Latin was a term used primarly in politics and spoke of the popularity of a person as a popular candidate or a general agreement of the people as being a popular opinion. Famous was a more "all encompassing" term and could apply to anything that was well known or acclaimed by people. In a modern sense, famous generally implies merit. In other words, one becomes famous for one's acting, or the best pizza, because one has earned the reputation. In the end, you could essentially use the words interchangeably and you would be grammatically correct in doing so.

Famous means many know who you are, you are most likly rich or a celebrity and you are probably not liked in some way shape or form by people. And paparrizzi follow you. Popular just means that people know who you are but they may not always remember you. If you're famous, more people know who you are and find it hard to forget you.

Apart from the previous answers, I think the difference also lies in the number of people who knows you. If it only the people in your highschool, then you're popular. If it's people from various cities, then you're famous.
