We have found the apt of our dreams in NJ for $1000, its a 2 bedroom, walk in closets, hardwood floors, great area, central air, huge windows, everything is brand new, BUT utilities are not included, like NONE. Ive never had to pay for my own utilities so I have no clue what I might be looking at. My fiance and I both work, he has 2 jobs, so do I , I go to school, so we are hardly ever home... but i dont want a $500 water or electric bill coming at me next month... any idea how much utilities might run us?

I am not sure exactly but ways you can cut down your cost would be not to use the central air. Use energy efficiant bulbs in the entire apartment. Close lights when they are not used. If watter is not included and you have to pay for it then i would say this may be gross but if its yellow let it mellow if its brown flush it down. Keep heat low in the winter time this will be the most expensive months. So maybe any place between 80-200 a month. Depends on how much you are an energy hog.

Any guess here is purely a guess. I've got an all electric house of nearly 3,000 sq ft and my electric has never been more than $300 on the coldest winter. But that's in SW MO and means nothing in NJ.

Call the utility companies. They can tell you what the bills were for the past year or two. Of course your use may vary significantly from the previous tenant's but it is a guide that will help you.
