I run a website which has been up for a few years now. This means that the spam-bots have had plenty of time to find my email address, and I'm constantly being bombarded with ads for Viagra and the like.

What are the best (free) ways to reduce the amount of spam? It seems like requiring input of randomly generated text is a common way, but how can I set this up?

Thanks!

Yes, the identify the letters in this picture is common. It is the most common type of captcha, the name for the tests that do this.

There are some captcha implementations out there, it is a matter of finding one that your host provider can run.

Contact forms without public email addresses would seem to me to be the first line of defense. If they have been figured out, then a captcha is a logical next step.

The 'input characters' is only useful to prevent spammers 'siging up' to your web site automatiaclly - once thay have your email address the spam is generated direct from the spammers 'own' (hijacked) computer, not from or via your web pages....

Either install an automated filtering system (eg. Yahoo spam filter) or change the eMail address at frequent intervals.
