Justice K G Balakrishnan is the current Chief Justice of India from January 14, 2007, he succeded Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal.

The Chief Justice of India is the highest position obtainable by a judge in India.

The chief justice of the Supreme Court is appointed on the basis of seniority by the President of India.The nominees for chief justice of the supreme court must have an experience of being judge of highcourt for at least 5 years, or be a lawyer for 10 years in the high court. Appointments of other judges to the Supreme Court are made by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice.
