It's because of there breeding timetable. I've noticed that garden spiders are usually born around this time and reach adult hood in the middle of the summer and are ending there life cycle around august. I'm really deadly affraid of spiders so I keep track of them year round.

Yeah - Bill's got it; most of the spiders in the Northern Hemisphere lay eggs as late in the fall as possible. They're trying to pack in as much food as they can in the last weeks before laying, so that they can lay more eggs and larger eggs - better chance of the young surviving.
