17x^2 - 102x + 85 < 0

divide all with 17, so
x^2 - 6x + 5 < 0
(x - 5)(x - 1) < 0

x - 5 < 0
x < 5

x - 1 < 0
x < 1

1 < x < 5

divide both sides by 17 to get x^2 - 6x + 5 < 0
complete the square by adding 4 to both sides, giving
x^2 - 6x + 9 < 4

Factorise to get
(x - 3)^2 < 4

Square root to get
-2 < x - 3 < 2

Add 3 to all segments to get
1 < x < 5

divide both sides by 17,

x^2-6x+5<0
or, (x-5)(x-1)<0
now, for the product of two terms two be negative, one must be positive and the other must be negative.
Here, x-1 can't be negative, because, if it were, x-5 would also be negative. so, x-5<0 and x-1>0
or, 1
