Destiny means, let's say you're destined to meet someone. It was "fate" that brought you together. Fate is like a pre-determined thing. As in, you guys were destined to be with each other. Mostly, yes they are synonyms.

Destiny and fate are the concepts of ultimate slavery: that regardless of whatever you decide or do, the actions you take and thoughts you have are already preordained. As long as fate exists there can be no true free will.
This is why I don't believe in either.
FIGHT THE POWER!! (but am I destined to do that?)

These are two words that are used by Some people who really do require some thing to blame or credit the result (bad and good ) for the events that are related to the effort put by the individual just to pacify themselves.
destiny is generally used by me when the result is emotionally related to my personal feelings, usually related with heart.
And fate when I know that I should have got some thing, but did not get it.

DESTINY is anything about you that you couldn't change like your blood type, your parents, your date of birth, etc.
But FATE is something that you made by your own hand... It's like what will you become... Anything that you can change about your future...

Before we talk of destiny... we shall understand the crux of karma. The destiny of a human being is directly proportional to the residual balance of karma of all the previous lives... manifestations!
Every human being has to pass through a phase of 1.1 million manifestations (an earthly life cycle of 12.1 million years). Compared to this... what importance is of one life span (considering the average life span of 70 to 80 years). If on the scale of 12.1 million earthly years we spot 70 to 80 years... it would not amount to even a dot... hence the saying that the destiny of a human being is fixed.
What is destiny after all! Is it not the fruits of karma that is made available to one based upon the residual balance of karma of all the previous lives! If one is passing through the 7.310065 millionth phase of life then the closing balance of all the previous manifestations (all 7.310064 manifestations) is what we term as destiny.
Having taken birth in the house of a farmer (as it was destined based upon the residual balance of karma)... one can marry a princess in the present life. And how is that possible? Simply by carrying out karma in present life accordingly so that the residual balance of karma in present life tilts in our favor and we get to marry the princess. It is possible for those who take the control of destiny in their hands.
Bill Gates, Madame Currie and all successful people in different walks of life fall in this category. None has control over the residual balance of karma of the previous lives but yes, we can definitely control our karma in present life.
And what is fate? Fate is that resultant karma of the previous lives that manifests suddenly in present life.
The process of karma is not that simple as it seems to be. Whatever karma we are performing now... the fruits of the same may become available to us right now, in the next manifestation or four manifestations henceforth! This is how the system was planned by God Almighty. None has control over it.
By chance of fate if a negative balance of karma which one had accumulated in previous lives fructifies in the present life... it practically spells doom for one! If a positive balance of karma fructifies... then someone is lucky... one may win a lottery.
If I take birth in present life in the house of a farmer... it is not the result of the absolute resultant balance of karma of all the previous lives. Apart from one being born in the house of a farmer... the effect of Prarabdha karma can become effective any moment and without a warning. This is what fate is all about.
Very few people are lucky who have a positive Prarabdha karma fructifying in present life... mostly it is the negative balance of karma which normally fructifies and destroys the present life. More on destiny - http://www.godrealized.com/destiny.html
