Ok I just bought and installed a Network Everywhere wired network card. I installed it in a computer running Windows XP. I have a new computer running Windows Vista Premium 64 bit.. The new computer came with an ethernet port pre-installed. When I run the computers together on an ethernet cord, both computers tell me there is a connection, but little or no connectivity and I cant share any files or network games (which was the original intent of networking my computers). Does anyone know how I can get the LAN to work properly so I can share files and games? The Windows website offers some help, but it mostly goes over my head. Please help.

Ignore all the cross over garbage.. at least for a few minutes!

Did you set an IP for each machine to use. If not click on the network connector icon (which shows your are connected but with little or no connectivity) Click that Status tab at the top and be sure each computer has a different IP assigned! If the box shows 0.0.0.0 go back to the other tab. Then click on the properties (near the bottom) then on "internet connection TCP/IP" once there you can enter a use the following IP box make one computer 192.168.1.2 with 255.255.255.0 do the same on the other compter but make it 192.168.1.3 dont use the same address.

Once each computer has an ip,, then see if you can get them to talking to each other... NO IP == limited connection.
If that fails then get the crossover... most nics (network cards) today support automatic crossover.

If you are connecting two computers together directly with no router, switch or hub between them you need a special ethernet cable called a "crossover" cable. Purchase one at BestBuys, RadioShack or where ever. Hook the computers up and go into Control Panel and run the Network Setup Wizard. Then go to a file you want to share (or folder), right click, select Properties, the sharing tab and share it. Good luck.

There is nothing Worng in your computers, the Ethernet Cord normally are made to used with Switched, you i dont think have one.

What you a need is a Crossover Ethernet Cable.

If you dont know how to made it, buy it, it is easliy available.

If you want to make it your self, remeber that Cross over cable is as ..

1st Cable Second Cable

1-------------------------3
2--------------------------6
3--------------------------1
4--------------------------4
5--------------------------5
6--------------------------2
7--------------------------7
8--------------------------8

Rember, from Ethernet 8 cables, only 4 are used actualy, 1-2-3-6
