I'm a huge Transformers fan, I just want it to be July 4th 2007 already, I'm 19 year old, so that means I was born in the late eighties, but grew up in the 90's, which was when Power Rangers(the very original) were the most popular at the time. So I didn't get to experience the Transformers craze during the 80's, & the He-Man craze, I even read that Optimus Prime was brought back life after Transformers The Movie because he became such a hero & icon, just like Superman & Batman are. Was he your hero people?, was he that popular in the 80's?

He was a hero to many because he was so noble, hard as nails if he needed to fight, but extremely moral. I would say he was a good role model for kids. The producers of the new film have described him as a 'King Arthur' like character.

I don't think he'll ever be as truly iconic as Batman or Superman (even if the new film is a massive success) simply because he is of a cast of many characters unlike them. Besides, I don't think the focus of the film is on Optimus Prime.

In many ways I liked some of the more flawed characters in Transformers (I'm talking comics here - the cartoons were ok but a little simplistic) such as the treacherous Starscream, the insecure Bumblebee and the Galvatron that was losing his sanity. In some ways, Op's sucessor Rodimus Prime was arguably a more interesting character, whilst not as great a leader, he had more inner-conflict and questioned his own worth as an Autobot leader.

Kind of, yeah. But I was really a fan of the guys I had the toys for (mainly Prowl, since he was my first Autobot, but others too) and I never had Optimus Prime.

I didn't cry when he was killed in Transformers: the Movie (I think I was still in shock from seeing Prowl cough up smoke and die) but I know others did.

In fact there was such an outcry over Optimus's death that they rewrote the ending to GI Joe: The movie. Originally, Duke was impaled by Serpentor's staff and died. But at the last minute, they added that he was only in a coma, which he came out of.

optimus prime was the bomb in the 80's. he and megatron were the ones to have. then in the 90's they started making him a gorilla and a dinosaur and whatever the hell else he became. OPTIMUS PRIME IS A TRUCK! that's the way us old schoolers like it.
