I happen to be lucky enough to live in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where not only the Battle of Gettysburg was fought, but Abraham Lincoln delivered the infamous Gettysburg Address. I also have a friend who lives in Canada, and loves studying the Civil War, and comes to Gettysburg anytime he has the opportunity. We do have here, in town, many museums, many tours are given, and of course, the National Military Park--the Gettysburg Battlefield. The Battlefield has been preserved in such a way that you're able to see what many of the soldiers who fought here saw. This is a town rich in Civil War history--however, contrary to someone elses answer, R.E. Lee did NOT surrender here! That didn't happen for two more years following the Battle of Gettysburg, and that was in Virginia!
Also, about an hour north of Gettysburg, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is the National Civil War Museum, a wonderful source of Civil War history.
Why not plan to visit this area of the U.S. someday? The internet is a wonderful way to start the process. Look up the Gettysburg Battlefield, Gettysburg, PA, and the Battle of Gettysburg, and see where that search takes you.
Good luck, and enjoy learning more about our little corner of the world!

the other posts are all good...let me add Antietam Battlefield in Pennsylvania just west of Gettysburg, where more men died in three days than anywhere else, ever, on the American continent, and Fredricksburg Virginia......

but A #1 has to be Gettysburg.......listen with the right ears and try to hear, in that sleepy little farmtown in an area not much changed from 1863, as half a million men met and fought and died..........I am a descendent of a Union Colonel, who three years before the war had been a professor at a small college in Maine; on July 3 1863 he and 250 Maine farmers and fishermen held a hill on the Union left; fired off all their ammunition then fixed bayonets and charged downhill to turn back the Confederate assault.....my son and I have looked down that hill and tried to imagine what great granduncle Joshua saw and did that day; we have stood behind the Union line looking across the flat open coverless field Pickett charged across and marveled, without truly being able to understand, at the raw courage that took a few Confederates actually to the Union lines.....

if anywhere in America is haunted, Gettysburg is the place...

One possibility: I don't know where in Canada you are, but there is a huge Civil War re-enactment group set in the Oregon/Washington area. Their biggest re-enactment is at Fort Stevens, Oregon (by Astoria) over Labor Day weekend. It might be worth it to drive down and see them. The re-enactors stay in part the whole weekend (at least while the public is there) and along with the battle re-enactments, they have hospital demonstrations, Fashion-shows, Shopping stalls with both authentic and reproduction items for sale, and a lot more. Whats also great is, many of the "generals/higher ranked members" know a lot of their history and can answer a lot of questions. Plus, if you head to it? Astoria's a great city to just visit.

Without doubt, and in the opinion of virtually all Civil War historians, the best collection is housed in the main branch of the Chicago City Library. It should be the first stop for anyone seriously interested in the Civil War.

Gettysburg, Pennsyvania. They have a museum filled with artifacts from the battle at Gettysburg, the place where Robert E. Lee surrendered. Plus they give a tour of the still bullet riddeled town and the battle fields and such. It's worth the trip.
