..Pattys Peppermint Toothpaste
http://betterwaytowellness.com/blog/2006/12/02/pattis-peppermint-toothpaste/
a basic guideline you can start with.
I take a 4oz wide mouth container and spoon 2-2.5 ounces of baking soda.
then mix in the rest of the dry ingredients:
four 8mcg capsules of folic acid
about a teaspoon of Vitamin C
about 1/2 teaspoon of xylitol

Then I add 2-3 drops of essential oil or some amount of other flavoring. (Essential oils are concentrated so it doesn’t take much. For the cinnamon one, I used about a teaspoon of powder).

Then I pour in some hydrogen peroxide and mix with a spoon.
I’m not sure on the amount. I pour in about a tablespoon or so and start mixing. If I need more, I drip in a bit more. I will say, it doesn’t take much liquid. Also as you’re mixing it gets warm and rises… it makes a lot of air bubbles. So you do need to have some room in the container.

You can make it more wet or more dry/pasty to your preference. And of course you can forever play around with flavors.

There you have it. I can pronounce every ingredient and it’s not too hard to do.

Natural Toothpaste Recipe!
Preface:
Natural toothpaste is easy to make and effectively whitens teeth. The main ingredients are baking soda and natural soap. Use unscented natural soap, such as Pallas Athene Soap's Pure Soap, which is available in the Handmade Natural Soap store. Natural soap contains only saponified olive and vegetable oils. Cleansing bars, detergent bars, and facial bars often contain harsh chemicals, artificial colorants, and synthetic fragrances. Only use natural soap to make toothpaste!

Supplies Required:
1 tablespoon grated Pure Soap
2 tablespoons baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 tablespoon filtered or distilled water
method of grating soap (such as a cheese grater or potato peeler)
small mixing spoon
measuring spoon (tablespoon)
small bowl
lid for the bowl or plastic wrap to seal the bowl
essential oils of spearmint and/or peppermint are optional
Step 1: Grate 1 Tablespoon of Soap.
To attain 1 tablespoon of grated soap, either use a cheese grater to grate the soap in the same manner used to grate cheese or use a potato peeler to peel shaved curls of soap from the edges of the bar. Measure 1 tablespoon of the grated soap by pressing the grated soap into the tablespoon until it is full and level, not heaping. Place the grated soap into a small bowl.

Step 2: Dissolve the Soap with 1 Tablespoon of Water.
Pour 1 tablespoon of water over the tablespoon of grated soap. Cover the bowl with a lid or with plastic wrap. Allow the soap to completely dissolve in the water for about an hour, until the combination becomes gelatinous. After an hour, check to make sure all of the soap has completely dissolved; if necessary, slowly stir with a spoon and re-cover the bowl until the soap has completely dissolved.

Step 3: Add the Remaining Ingredients.
Uncover the bowl and add 2 level tablespoons of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to the dissolved soap. Use a small mixing spoon to combine the ingredients. Note: The combination will seem too dry but do not add more water; after continuing to mix with a spoon for about 1 minute, the product will resemble the consistency of commercial toothpaste. The natural toothpaste may be used without flavoring; however, to make the unsweetened, unflavored natural toothpaste more palatable, add 30 drops of essential oils for natural flavoring. The recommended essential oils are 15 drops of spearmint and 15 drops of peppermint. Mix in the essential oils and cover the bowl to prevent the essential oils from evaporating.

Directions for Use of Natural Toothpaste:
Dip dry toothbrush into the natural toothpaste to apply approximately ½ teaspoon to toothbrush. Brush teeth as usual. This recipe yields enough natural toothpaste for approximately twelve applications. The recipe ingredients may be doubled to yield a larger quantity of toothpaste. Once made, the toothpaste should be stored in a sealed container and used within 3 weeks.

There are a lot of old recipes for tooth powders that people used to use to clean their teeth. I read one that involved scraping the charcoal off burnt toast.

For a couple of weeks, I used sea salt rubbed with fresh sage. It was . . . interesting. Not minty fresh, that's for sure, but it did the job.

I hope someone posts a great recipe! I asked this question a few days ago, actually, and the first poster thought I was nuts. Almost everyone else recommended baking soda or salt.

I don't know how you can make toothpaste, but if you don't have toothpaste to use, you can brush your teeth with baking soda.
