Hi,
despite the lion being called 'the king of beasts' it is not as fierce, not as big, nor as effective a killer as the tiger.
If tigers actually lived in Africa they would be the new 'kings of beasts'.
The Bengal tiger is considerably larger than the lion, though there are some smaller tiger versions here and there, but, overall the tiger is definitely the larger.
Cheers,
BobSpain

The biggest carnivore existing currently on the face of the planet is the polar bear.
When it comes to members of the cat family, the tiger comes on top as the champ, even over the 'king of the jungle'. The Siberian tiger is the largest and weighs more than any other tiger species. (applicable to males and females, and males outweigh the females in size)

3 of the seven tiger subspecies have average weights greater than a lion. The most common subspecies, the bengal, is roughly equal to a lion in size.

The official records I know of:
lion - longest 3.40 m (Transwaal), heaviest 313 kg (wild), 375 captive ("Simba")
tiger: longest 3.23 m ) heaviest wild 389 kg (exhibited in Smithsonian).
I heard of a lion shot in Angola measuring 3.6m (Wikipedia), and of a Siberian tiger (Jaipur) measuring 3.35 and weighing over 400 kg, but don't know if these are verified.
