On close ups, the men look fine, but for the women they appear slightly blurred. Why?

They used a filter on quite a few shots to cut down the glare from the lights and soften the texture of things, make them seem more genuine. You only notice it on the close ups however because the edges seem blurred to make you think that this is the man's perspective and he is enamored with the female. It is implied romance.

The soft lighting us supposed to make the women look better...not unlike Glamour Shots photos. The most blatant use of this technique is in the episode called Mudd's Women. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it did not.

Its glamour shots...thats how movies were filmed back then and even earlier in history ...if you look at black and white films ALL the close-ups are hazey like that.
