What are the rules on stealing a liscense plate from someone elses car? my liscense plates were stolen and i know who it was, im wondering what will happen to them?

It's a "state" matter, since license plates are technically "state property". They are "loaned" to your when you register your vehicle, and must be surrendered when you no longer needed it.

Just report the plates stolen, get some new ones ASAP, and then when you see the plates out on the street, call the NON-emergency police dispatch and tell you you spotted this vehicle sporting a STOLEN LICENSE PLATE at so and so location. Then hope something happens.

It's probably a state crime unless the license plates were federal gov't plates.

In California it is a violation of section 10500(a) which is classified as an infraction which normally carries only a fine.

Contact your local DMV immediately and find out what you must do. Not only is it a crime, you must be certain that you have reported it in order to prevent liability and from being held responsible for any conduct by the user of your stolen plate.

Theft by taking.
Also means they must not have proper registration and insurance.. all extra add ons.
Call the cops.
