There really is no difference. iPods technically are mp3 players, but they are just more popular than others. They are no better than any other mp3 player, vice versa.

An MP3 is an outdated format for compressing files from music CDs. It's about ten years old at this point, it has been improved upon in several ways, and the only advantage that still hasn't been trumped by some other format is that it is and will likely remain the only universal digital music file format.
An iPod is a device that is capable of playing music files, including the MP3 format, but also a few others that have much better sound quality, like AAC and Apple Lossless.

It's amazing the amount of ignorance shown here. All these answers and only one semi - if not thorough - correct answer.
An iPod is an MP3 player just like every other MP3 player.
An MP3 is an audio format and the most widely used because it compresses the audio well while still containing good quality (though there are other audio formats with better quality but they make audio files much bigger (like FLAC, .WAV, etc.)
MP3 players vary like any other product varies. iPods have universal brand recognition, sleek design and a myriad of third-party accessories. Other MP3 players tend to cost less and have more features right out of the box, like have a voice recorder and FM tuner (the iPod can do this too but it requires third-party peripherals).

IPOD is the device you listen to mp3's on. its probably the best mp3 player there is the only other competition is the ZUNE and it has some cool features but the quality just isn't quite there. theres also a CREATIVE but the quality is even worse but ya mp3 is the format in which you save the music the is also AAC, wma, and so on but mp3 is the most universal and usually the easiest to deal with but not always the best of quality. id recommend that you do some price checking on what you think you'll need for storage space ipod has option all the way from 1gig(250songs) to 80gigs(20000)songs that's huge i went with the 30 gig and its more than enuf for what i need but you never know you might want a 80 for movies and pictures.theres really alot that can be done on the ipod that other devices just can't do

Well..mp3's can be a lot cheaper..but also they can be cheaply made.
I had an mp3 and not only did it suck to use because it was so hard to find and organize songs..but it also stopped working after a year! Luckily i had a warranty and then we found out that company went bankrupt but we still got our money back and i purchased an ipod, which i know love and have had no problems with!!
So if you want to save money at first with not much of a guarantee then i would get a non brand name mp3 player..but if you would like to be safe then i would go with the ipod!
just my opinion..hope I've helped! =)

there isn't a difference-ipod is just apple's version of an mp3 player. ipods really aren't as great as everyone keeps saying. they always black out on ya and freeze up all of a sudden. my opinion is that the Creative Zen V Plus mp3 player is the best music player out there!

Actually,an iPod IS an mp3 player, among other things. Basically, the differences between iPods and other mp3 players are extra features, storage space, and ease of use. And cost, of course.
Hope this helps!

Virtually none. Songs are called MP3s and MP4s. Mp3 players play the mp3 format. iPods play both and can convert. All-in-all, iPods are way better!

Well I'm not really sure but I do know that I bought an mp3 player that held about 100 songs and that went fast but then I bought an ipod and now I'm up to 400 songs and I have room for about 1,000 more.

Ipods can hold mp3 files while mp3 players can't. Also, Ipods can hold more songs since they can store an incredibly large amount of data.
