Sorry, but when I reached the age of 30 I stopped boinking and started making love. Now I'm 60 and I don't remember what boinking was. I still make love, though.

I don't agree. No one has come up with a better alternative. What would you suggest, this is the person I'm boinking? At about 60, it might be better to call each other " companions".

I suppose you associate having a girlfriend or boyfriend with young people, and that's why you don't like it. But some of the alternatives are not great either. I don't really like "going steady"; it sounds way too 1950s for me. "Significant other" just sounds stupid. If you publicly refer to your girlfriend or boyfriend as "my sweetheart" you will be pelted with scorn from people around you. Same deal if you refer to someone as "my lover", "my old man" or "my old lady", or "the old ball and chain". "My better half" is patronizing. And the one I dislike the most is "partner". Partners are for business transactions and I find it really creepy when used in realtionships.
If you know of any terms that sound good and are appropriate then I'd love to hear them, but generally "girlfriend" or "boyfriend" are the most innocuous and they kind of win by default, even though I didn't really like the term all that much even when I was in highschool. The nice thing about it is that it is very clear and everybody understands what you are talking about, and it is reasonably respectful while sounding somewhat affectionate, not cold, but too too affectionate for the general publics ears.

I think once people reach the age of forty they shouldn't use the word "boinking."

Then what would you recommend they call them? In all honesty it sounds kinda funny to hear any adult call their lover a girlfriend or boyfriend considering most guys are offended to be called boys past the age of 17 or 18? And most girls think their a woman once they start to develop.

I am single and 42.If I am dating someone and they are not my husband, what would you have me call them? Of course I will call him my boyfriend. Why does that give you the creeps? In a perfect world I would be married and things would be great. But things don't always turn out the way you want it to.

Yes, it sounds weird, when a grandparent has a girlfriend/boyfriend.
(This is coming from a 45 year old.)

Heck they can call them what ever they want as long as the boinkee keeps putting out. Over 40 you take what you can get.
