Well, I want to get a new computer... not sure if it is going to be a desktop or not. I'm torn between pc and mac. I've always used a pc. I'm going to use it for like school and stuff, and like music and entertainment stuff like that. I want to spend the LEAST amount of money possible. What is the best thing for my money? And if a pc what brand.

Personally, I never advise anyone to do anything but build their own. This helps 2 areas.
#1 is choice. What goes in it is exactly what you want and need. Its not the absolute cheapest way to go, but you get MUCH better parts for only a LITTLE more money. This leads us to reason 2.
#2 is this. If you're on a budget, you can get more pc in the long run if you build it yourself because you don't have to buy it all at once.
Buy a case one week for $100 or so. (OEM computer cases are designed specifically for POOR airflow...don't believe that, take a gander inside your buddy's HP minitower.) That way parts fail and they make $ replacing them.
Buy a power supply next week.
Buy a motherboard week after that.
Then a CPU.
Ect ect ect.
Deffinitely the best WTG.

I prefer PC, but I suggest that you install Linux and try not to use Windows as much as possible, Linux is free and has every program that Windows has, but Linux is open source and you can reconfigure it, also because Linux is not much used it is unlikely that you will get hacked, I have Linux from 5 years on a PC and also have Mac G5, also have an old Book and 2 year old Dell, see I do websites and write softwares so I need to be as much on the top as possible, hope I helped

Macs start at 1000 $, so you want a pc. A good pc is one custom bult for your personal needs. Find your local computer store and tell them what you need and they'll help you out. I don't mean a big chain store, i mean a smal local computer store. Now if you want to get a name brand, get a a e-machine. There cheap, and unless your using you computer for demanding task(such as editing video and games) there fairly reliable.

For low cost, I would get a Windows PC.

Make sure you get
Dual Core processor, 1-2 GB RAM, PCI express X16 slot if desktop, Vita Home Premium, CD/DVD dual layer burner, all software and driver disks.

I like Dell
Also check specials at local stores, Walmart, and Tigerdirect.

If you have a decent monitor and speakers, take a look at Dell Outlet.

Example:
Dimension E520 Small Mini-Tower: $549
Intel Core 2 Duo (1.86GHz, 1066 FSB) ; 2GB RAM 533MHz
Windows Vista Home Premium
16X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability; DVD software
250 GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM); 256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE; Ethernet port; 56K DataFax: Keyboard; Mouse, etc.
