If the movie is a prequel then I am confused. Daniel Craig (James Bond) had not acheived "00" status, however Judi Dench (M), should not be in charge if it is a prequel since she was in two or three recent movies. In addition to that there are cell phones, late model cars, sinage, and other items from the 21st century. Am I missing something from other Bond films or is this an attempt to attract younger viewers not familiar with the Bond franchise?

It's not technically a prequel it's a reboot. The Bond franchise is starting over again. Bond has been around for 40 years if he started in his 30's then he'd be fighting baddies at 70 years old.

Die Another Day is the last of the old Bond films the new ones are suppossed to be more true to the character however they've done all the books and pretty much all the short stories now so the next Bond film will feature all new material and will be a direct sequel to Casino Royale.

Judi played a different style M as noted by her different personality and some remarks she made. (M meaning her name when it really stands for Minister of Defence as Q stood for Quartermaster per the old films and books)

On the movie website there are references to Bond never being married (he married in On Her Majesty's Secret Service) and info on his service in the Gulf War while in the Navy and so on to give the new Bond a more up to date background.

Ironically Casino Royale is the first Bond novel and the last Bond film based on an original Ian Fleming novel or taking it's title from a Fleming novel or short story.

I belong to many of the 007 online groups and have watched the movies since 1965. The producers have labeled Casino Royale 2007 as a ReBoot. Most of the older fans i communicate with DO NOT consider it a remake or a prequel. If you get into all of the 007 literary and movie technicalities (all the way back to Dr.No 1963?? to Casino Royale first published 1953) the whole setting has changed. We now have Osama Bin laden as opposed to the Soviet Union. Many of the older fans say if the Bond makers REALLY wanted to do Casino Royale (2007) they would have set it in about 1953-as kind of a period piece action movie. Maybe before the character of "M" (judi dench, bernard lee) came into the series. I did not like the book or either version of CASINO ROYALE.As a matter of fact-i have seen it suggested that the Bond producers are actually trying to put the Bond series to sleep. Casino Royale 2007 lacked so much 007 symbolism

This is a remake of the original Bond movie "Casino Royale" made in the 60's, thats why he movie starts out in black & white. It is just has a modern setting. It's like the spider-man movies, the original comic book he was bitten by a radioactive spider, now he was bitten by a lab-built super spider, you have to change with the times.

Also many people believed the Bond movies had become nothing but a high-tech gadget show. If you watch some of the old Bond movies, he had a couple of gadgets, but not a new toy or two for every scene. More action and story line, less flash.

I have seen about every Bond movie made (more than once), and I think this was one of the best. Craig rates right up there with Connery.

boomboom is kinda right, but not. Casino Royale is one of,if not the first books that Ian Flemming wrote. They have tried for some years to get back to what made it such a hit, but since Flemming died, and they have no more stories of his, the went back and made this one, which starts out before he was a "00". The first Casino Royale was a spoof, and made fun of James Bond, very different from Flemmings work. This isn't the first time the remade a Bond film, Never say never again was basiclly thunderball.

It's not a prequel but a reset in which they are basically starting over in a different timeline than the previous movies.

"CASINO ROYALE" IS ACTUALLY A REMAKE OF A MOVIE MADE IN ABOUT 1958. DAVID NIVEN STARRED AS THE MASTERFUL JAMES BOND.
THE NEW UPDATED MOVIE IS AN ATTEMPT TO GO BACK AND REWRITE THE HISTORY OF BOND AS WRITTEN BY IAN FLEMMING.
