The media covers the status quo. It is not in the best interest of corporate media to promote alternative view points.

The media only covers two parties for elections as they are the major parties. Those two major parties will be the make up of the voted majority government of the minority opposition. Now if there were other parties of the size and magnitude as the Republicans and Democrats then most definitely they would receive the same media attention. But its all about ratings and the media houses knows that the major of the country is behind either the Reps. or the Dems. To keep ratings up, they show footage of mainly those two parties.

The news is all about viewership and being cheap. Most news is gathered by the Associated Press and then the reporters and editors make the news "local." I'm sure in areas where third party canidates are strong, the local media will cover the third party candidates, but in areas that vote mostly Republican and Democratic the news caters to their interests.
