i just bought a 1990 toyota corolla and one of its problems is that it doesnt want to start when its been sitting for a while. this has nothing to do with the weather, as when its 80 f outside it still wont start as long as its sat for about 6 hours. anyways, i always starts, but it takes work. i found that if you hold the key to start the engine does turn over, but does not start. if you pupmp the gas while doing so, it helps. recently i have tried to hold the key for about 5 sec. stop. wait for a second or two. then, on the second turn it starts right up. me confused. i dont know what it if. i have a major tune up: distributor, rotor, spark plugs, wires, oil change, tranny fluch, radiator flush, all the stuff. so the car likes me, it just wont start right away. i even put a fuel injector cleaner in it. the other issue, which may be related, is that the car seems to smell like gas when starting and burns gas. the mpg should be 35 and its 19. help!

another thing that i forgot to add is that when the car is warm, it starts just fine, lets say that once it starts the first time, it'll start every time as long as it doesnt sit too long. i read one of the answers that someone wrote on the same prob, diff car. i tried what they said: turn key to ON for 5 sec, turn off for 5 sec. turn to ON for 5 sec, turn to off, repeat. right after that, car started right up. the only thing, i dont know what it means, hope that helps diagnose the problem. thank you to those who already answered.
