Society has nothing to do with it, women will always make each other jealous in the constant strive to stand out. You have no one to blame but yourselves for the growingly impossible to obtain ideal look.

yes, I think society plays a big part on body image because now days people are lead to believe that you should be thin and the thinner the better. A lot of models are always looking for that I deal body so they can be the best that they are. Young teens look up to models, and if they see how thin they are then that trend goes on and on. I think it's ok to have a great body but not to the intent that it affects your health.

By that logic, of course, the emphasis on muscular males "harms" males too, leading them to steroid use to increase muscle mass which could possibly drug use. It could also cause them to enter frequent states of depression concerning their physique.
So sure, society's emphasis on body image harms females AND males.

I think society's obsession with body image harms both females and males. More money is now being spent on advertising for men, pushing them to develop abs, prevent baldness, use special lotions and creams for their face and skin, and more men are going to spas and are now getting cosmetic operations to quickly "tone-up" and look young.
Girls and women feel the pressure to conform to unrealistic body sizes and looks every day in the US, but women are blamed for listening to the media, their friends, their families, and their peers. Maybe when boys and men are made to feel many of these same pressures, more men will join women to rebel against the destructive expectations being advertised not just daily, but hourly.
Good question..

Most likely, yeah. But I think there's blame to be shared in this- for men and women. The stick-thin, bulimic model look? I think you have the fashion industry to blame for that. Most guys aren't really into that look and prefer a few curves (say what you will about porn stars- that's a whole 'nother set of body image issues- at least they look like they eat!)

Get real... Bulimia, anorexia, botox injections, eyeliner tattooing, low self esteem, insecurities, mental torment, induced by cosmopolitan imagery...Just some of the crazy making ideas boosted by the emphasis of society on body image....Not only harmful but deadly...

Women and men. Women are more hurt, for now, because the feminine beauty ideal is a lot more narrow and important than for men. Women are judged on our appearance more than men are, although they're starting to catch up on that. The rates of eating disorders are rising in young men because of the increasing focus on physical beauty and "perfection" for men, plus who knows how many are killing themselves in the gym with the supplements? When us feminists started talking about this, this wasn't the sort of equality we were looking for, stupid advertising industry.

Yes and no. Depends on the type of person you are.
Just like everything else; some people get disturbed by certain actions, others don't react to it. I am saying, a smart, rational, confident person, whether slim or overweight, couldn't care less, then there are others, slim or overweight, who are really bothered and affected by society.

I think it does. I have a friend who is on the thick side but I think she's beautiful inside and out, but she gets hooked on losing weight because of shows like Top Model and that one chick that used to be a judge on it and they talk about anyone with curves being fat.
