Identify the species that is to be reduced and to be oxidized, and write the half equations
2 I+ -> I2 + 2e
2N-3 + 6e > 2N+5
First balance the electrons (eq 1 x 3,
6 I- -> 3 I2 + 6e-
2N-3+ + 6e -> 2N+ 5
Now use water to provide oxygen where needed and H+ to indicate a shortage of hydrogen to oxygen in water
The "O" from the hypoiodide ion provides 5 oxygens, which meets the NO3- requirement.
Thus the H+ is that left from the hydrozonium ion or 5 H+.
