Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix are the expected ones.... but I'm gonna say George Harrison. He was restrained in the Beatles, but "Here Comes the Sun" showed how cool he could be. I'm also saying Harrison because he brought the then little known sitar into the American pop music scene. He adjusted the views of many guitar enthusiasts by bringing out and learning to play such a unique instrument.

Jimi Hendrix grabs the Best Guitarist, 60's era---bar none! His Woodstock ending piece "The Star Spangeled Banner" was way ahead of it's time.....and Jimi was stone cold sober (he only pretended to be high) when he did it!!!!
A lot of competetion sprang during the 70's: Tom Scholz (Boston), Jimmy Page (Zeppelin), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Billy Squier, Rick Medlock (Blackfoot), Geddy Lee (bass--Rush) and Jon Entwistle (bass--The Who).........plenty to be heard...and all deserving Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame honors, too!

Many say Clapton - Jimi Hendrix is also mentioned a lot. I want to add that I think George Harrison is very underrrated. Eddie Van Halen also deserves a mention.
